BEVERLY HILLS, California (Reuters) – Hollywood stars like Selena Gomez and Timothee Chalamet will convene in Beverly Hills on Sunday for the annual Golden Globes celebration, marking the first major awards ceremony in a year lacking a clear frontrunner for the top movie accolades. Netflix’s Spanish-language musical thriller “Emilia Perez” and “The Brutalist,” a 3-1/2 hour post-World War II drama with an intermission, are at the forefront among the movies contending for Globe trophies. Other notable contenders include the box office success “Wicked,” adapted from the Broadway play centered on the witches in “The Wizard of Oz,” and the papal selection story “Conclave.”

On the television front, the restaurant tale “The Bear” and mystery comedy “Only Murders in the Building” will be competing for TV honors. The Golden Globes event will be aired live on CBS and the Paramount+ streaming service, commencing at 8 p.m. Eastern on Sunday (1 a.m. GMT). Stand-up comedian Nikki Glaser is set to host the champagne-infused festivities for the first time. In anticipation of the event, Glaser expressed her intention to celebrate the A-list nominees rather than jest at their expense, as some previous hosts have done. “I want people who were nominated to feel proud of themselves. I don’t want them to feel under attack,” Glaser remarked in an interview. “I’m really excited to share these jokes with a massive audience.”

The presenter lineup for the Golden Globes includes prominent celebrities such as Dwayne Johnson, Elton John, Andrew Garfield, and Awkwafina. Winning a Golden Globe can significantly boost the visibility of movies and performances in the lead-up to the Academy Awards in March. As per awards analysts, there is no distinct frontrunner for the coveted best picture prize at the Oscars yet.

Differing from the Oscars, the Golden Globes categorize films into two distinct sections. “Conclave” and “The Brutalist” are noted as strong choices in the best film drama category, while “Wicked” and “Emilia Perez” emerge as top contenders for the best movie musical or comedy award. The Golden Globe honorees are selected by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, in contrast to the roughly 9,000 voters who determine the Academy Awards winners. Following criticism for ethical breaches and a lack of diversity, the Golden Globes voting body has expanded in recent years, alongside the implementation of organizational reforms.

Timothee Chalamet is in the running for the best film drama actor award for his portrayal of musician Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” His competitors include Adrien Brody, who plays a Holocaust survivor and architect pursuing the American dream in “The Brutalist.” Selena Gomez has garnered a double nomination, recognized for her supporting role in “Emilia Perez,”
