Give Blood, Get Free Weed! Popular Blood Drive Entices Donors with Cannabis Exclusives!

An Illinois blood bank and a local dispensary have joined forces to combat a blood shortage and challenge the stigma surrounding cannabis. Rock River Valley Blood Center and Lyfe Dispensary are hosting a unique event called “Bleed for Weed” on March 22 in Freeport, Ill., with the aim of boosting the blood supply in the area. During the drive, donors receive a voucher from local news outlet WIFR that can be redeemed at Lyfe Dispensary in Rockford, Ill. for either an eighth of flower or an edible. Additionally, T-shirts are available for donors who prefer not to partake in the cannabis offerings.

The event, held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grand River Hall in Freeport, was successful when it debuted last year according to Michael Hodges, one of the dispensary owners. Lisa Entrikin, CEO of RRVBC, notes that the region is facing a critical blood shortage and traditional outreach methods have proven less effective. However, the partnership with the dispensary has attracted new donors, with over 50 percent being first-time donors at the previous event.

While donors must not be under the influence when donating, simply using cannabis does not disqualify individuals from donating blood. Hodges emphasizes the importance of the event in dispelling misconceptions about cannabis users being unable to donate. By educating the public and encouraging donations, the initiative aims to increase donor participation and positively impact the community.
