Despite the setbacks faced, Mara and Tisch conveyed confidence in the processes implemented by Schoen and Daboll, as well as their shared vision for the team. Looking ahead, they expressed optimism for the future and the determination to achieve the desired results moving forward.
Both Schoen and Daboll were brought on board by the Giants in 2022, initially enjoying a promising start as the team secured a 9-7-1 record and clinched a playoff spot. Their postseason journey saw them triumph over Minnesota in the wild-card round, only to succumb to NFC East rivals, Philadelphia, who eventually emerged as the conference champions, in the divisional round. Notably, Daboll was honored as the AP NFL Coach of the Year for his contributions.
However, challenges emerged during the subsequent season, with quarterback Daniel Jones encountering injuries and inconsistent performances. The Giants struggled to a 6-11 finish, prompting Jones’ benching due to subpar play after a challenging 2-8 start. Subsequently, Jones requested and was granted his release by the team, leading to the utilization of Tommy DeVito and Drew Lock as starting quarterbacks in the final stretch of the season, where the Giants only managed to secure one victory in seven games.
Following a disappointing three-win season, Daboll acknowledged the substantial work that lies ahead for the team. The season was marred by a franchise-record 10-game losing streak, underscoring the need for significant improvements moving forward. The decision not to re-sign running back Saquon Barkley, who went on to achieve significant success with NFC East rivals Philadelphia, further compounded the challenges faced by the Giants.
The frustration among fans was palpable, with banners flown from planes above MetLife Stadium urging Mara to consider sweeping changes in response to the team’s struggles. Despite external pressures for a revamp, the Giants have opted to retain Schoen and Daboll for the upcoming season.
