Just as fashion and home décor evolve each year, so do trends in home appliances. While it may not be practical to redesign your kitchen annually to keep up with the latest styles, there are times when appliances need to be replaced. When the time comes to invest in a new appliance, consider it an opportunity to embrace the newest innovations.
We spoke with a professional kitchen designer and an interior designer to learn about the trends we can expect to see in 2025 and why they are in high demand:
Meet the Experts:
– Barbra Scarpulla, designer and project manager at Brattesani Designs
– Hilary Matt, principal designer and founder of Hilary Matt Interiors
1. Microwave Drawers:
Instead of traditional countertop or over-the-range microwaves, more people are opting for microwave drawers. These drawers pull out like a drawer, offering a sleek and hidden look on the side of an island. They are also more convenient and accessible compared to standard microwaves located above a range.
2. Sustainable Appliances:
Newer appliances are incorporating technology to enhance efficiency and sustainability. Homeowners are increasingly interested in eco-friendly features that help reduce waste. For example, Sub-Zero has introduced a refrigerator with NASA-inspired technology that purifies the air and extends the freshness of produce.
3. Slide-In Ranges:
Slide-in ranges, also known as backless stoves, feature controls on the front of the range. This design allows the tile backsplash and pot filler to stand out, creating a more visually appealing kitchen setup.
4. Refrigerator Drawers:
Designated bar areas are becoming popular for entertaining guests. Under-cabinet refrigerators and refrigerator drawers are convenient choices for these spaces, eliminating the need to constantly visit the main kitchen.
5. Smart Appliances:
Smart appliances simplify daily tasks and continue to be a growing trend in residential kitchens. With new technology constantly being added, the demand for smart appliances is expected to increase in 2025.
6. Ice Makers:
Standard ice makers in freezers or refrigerators may not meet the demands of some households. Under-counter ice makers, commonly found in restaurants, are gaining popularity in residential kitchens for their efficiency.
7. Outdoor Appliances:
Outdoor kitchens have become a popular trend, elevating outdoor entertaining and cooking experiences. What was once considered a luxury, backyard grills are now essential for enjoying outdoor meals and gatherings.
From undercounter refrigeration to specialized grills and other cooking tools, these additions reduce the need for frequent trips inside while enhancing your entertaining arrangement,” states Matt.
Panel-Ready Appliances
Certain appliances can be personalized with an exterior panel that complements the existing cabinetry in a kitchen—and they are growing in popularity. These appliances typically have the same depth as the counters, contributing to a more minimalistic, sleek appearance, according to Scarpulla. Various types of appliances are available in panel-ready options, including standard refrigerators, wine refrigerators, dishwashers, and even ice makers.
