German Chancellor Criticizes President Trump’s Contentious Gaza Proposal During Debate

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany labeled President Donald Trump’s idea of the U.S. assuming control of the Gaza Strip, relocating its inhabitants, and transforming it into a new destination as “outrageous” in a debate held before the upcoming election. His main opponent, Friedrich Merz, also expressed discomfort with the proposal, acknowledging the abundance of strong language emanating from Washington.

The center-left Scholz and center-right contender Merz, who is leading in the polls for the February 23 election, delved into various pressing domestic issues such as Germany’s economic challenges and migration concerns, in addition to touching upon foreign policy matters amid the outset of Trump’s new term.

When prompted about his opinion on Trump’s proposition of turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” Scholz retorted, “It’s scandalous. Furthermore, it’s an incredibly insensitive statement,” especially given the current visible devastation in the region. “The forced relocation of populations is intolerable and violates international law,” he emphasized during the televised debate on ARD and ZDF. Scholz highlighted the opposition of Egypt and Jordan to such a move.

Merz echoed Scholz’s sentiment, stating, “I concur with this stance. However, it is just one of many controversial suggestions emerging from the U.S. administration; hence, it’s crucial to discern the seriousness behind such proposals and the extent of rhetoric involved.” The two candidates diverged in their views on Trump’s directive recognizing only two sexes, with Merz expressing understanding for the decision and Scholz deeming it inappropriate. “Every individual should have the freedom to pursue happiness in their own way,” Scholz remarked.

Merz characterized the new U.S. president as “consistently unpredictable,” expressing concerns about potential future developments and stressing the importance of unity across the Atlantic. “It’s imperative for us on this side of the ocean to stand together as much as possible,” Merz emphasized. He outlined his commitment, if elected, to fostering European unity.

Scholz outlined his approach to engaging with Trump, emphasizing “clear communication and diplomatic discussions.” Referring to Trump’s previous remarks regarding the Panama Canal and Greenland, Scholz underscored the necessity for all nations to respect established borders. He mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance NATO’s presence in Greenland in collaboration with other European nations.

Regarding the possibility of U.S. tariffs targeting the EU, Scholz asserted, “We are ready to respond promptly. As the European Union, we can take action within an hour.”
