The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are currently conducting an investigation into the death of Judge Steve Yekel, whose body was discovered in the Effingham County Courthouse. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Authorities have indicated that Yekel passed away sometime during the late hours of Monday night or the early hours of Tuesday morning. Yekel, who had been serving as a judge since his appointment by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp two years ago, had recently lost his reelection bid earlier this year. His term was set to conclude on December 31, 2024.
Expressing their profound grief over the tragic loss, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners issued a statement conveying their condolences to Yekel’s family and loved ones. They remarked, “The Effingham County Board of Commissioners and staff are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Judge Steve Yekel at the Effingham County Courthouse today, and we offer our condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Efforts to gather additional information and comments from the Effingham County Board of Commissioners are underway.
