Nearly 73 years after the release of the classic film Singin’ in the Rain, Gene Kelly’s wife is dispelling some long-standing rumors about the movie. Gene Kelly, renowned as one of Hollywood’s greatest dancers, was once rumored to have pushed his co-star Debbie Reynolds to the point of bleeding feet.
In a recent interview with Remind magazine, Patricia Kelly stated unequivocally, “It is simply not true.” Patricia went on to emphasize the supportive relationships her husband shared with his fellow actors. “Debbie actually expressed gratitude to him multiple times for kickstarting her career,” the 65-year-old author revealed. “George Chakiris, Leslie Caron, and many other dancers have attested to Gene’s thoughtfulness.”
Despite his ambitious nature, Gene Kelly was mindful of the physical toll of dancing and prioritized the well-being of those around him, according to his wife. “He was always concerned about performers developing injuries from dancing on hard surfaces,” Patricia explained. “While he set high standards for himself and others, performers and crew members alike have shared stories of his professionalism and kindness.”
In her conversation with Remind, Patricia also addressed another common misconception regarding the film’s iconic rain scene. Fans have often questioned why the rain appears white, with some speculating that milk was used instead of water to enhance its visibility. “There is a persistent belief that milk was added to the water in the famous ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ sequence, but this is simply not true,” Patricia clarified. “The effect was achieved through exceptional lighting and cinematography.”
Gene Kelly passed away on February 2, 1996, at the age of 83. He is remembered for his outstanding performances in movies such as An American in Paris (1951), On the Town (1949), and The Pirate (1948). Prior to Patricia, he was married twice and had three children.
