Health officials in Nevada have confirmed two cases of Hantavirus, a dangerous disease spread by rats.
With the weather warming up, they are advising residents to take precautions to prevent infection. Earlier this year, Betsy Arakawa, the wife of actor Gene Hackman, tragically died from the virus. Authorities are warning that the virus that killed her is now spreading across the country.
The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and the Nevada Department of Wildlife have urged people to watch out for any signs of rodent activity and to minimise their risk of exposure to the virus. Symptoms of the disease include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, coughing and shortness of breath. If not treated promptly, the disease can be life-threatening.
To reduce the risk of exposure to the virus, officials recommend sealing entry points for rodents, using traps, and properly storing food and rubbish. It is also crucial to clean areas with rodent activity while wearing gloves and a mask. As people become more active in areas where rodents may be present, such as sheds and garages, they should exercise caution to avoid contact with infected rodents.
The tragic death of Betsy Arakawa highlights the seriousness of hantavirus and serves as a reminder of the importance of taking precautions to prevent the spread of this deadly disease.
