In a statement made by the Japanese coast guard, it was reported that the V-22 Osprey aircraft belonging to the US military crashed off the coast of Yakushima Island in the west of the country around 14.47 local time with 8 people on board.

It was stated that patrol boats and planes were sent to the area and the fate of the 8 people was unknown.

Japan's Ministry of Defense stated that the plane disappeared from radar around 14.40, while the spokesperson of the US forces in the region stated that they are still gathering information about the incident. Eyewitnesses stated that the left engine of the plane caught fire while descending.

On the other hand, last August, a US V-22 Osprey military aircraft crashed off the coast of Australia during a military exercise, killing 3 marines.
