The United Nations (UN) has extended the mandate of the UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for another 1 year.

The decision to extend UNSMIL's mandate until October 31, 2024 was unanimously adopted by the 15-member UN Security Council.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is known as the special political mission established by the UN Security Council on September 16, 2011 upon the request of the Libyan authorities to support the political transition process in the country due to the conflict in 2011.

The Mission, which was last headed by Abdoulaye Bathily on September 25, 2022, with 98 local staff, 210 international staff and 6 UN volunteers, works to end the fragmentation of military forces and economic institutions in Libya and mediates between the conflicting parties.
