According to state television NHK, an auction for local breeds was held in Mie Prefecture, one of the regions known for its premium marble beef. The auction featured 50 cattle graded by 9 judges from the Mie Prefecture Livestock Research Institute based on size, coat and overall physical balance.

"Hiroko No.1", a 676-kilogram Matsusaka cattle, fetched 30 million yen ($202,000). This was recorded as the highest buyer price in the last 8 years. "Asahiya" butcher shop from Tsu district of Mie became the new owner of the cattle.

Nakamura Kazuaki, a Japanese breeder from the Taiki district who raised the cattle, said, "I was surprised by the unexpectedly high price. I am happy that my efforts to care for the cattle have paid off and I want to breed even better cattle."
