Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of Catholics and head of state of the Vatican, has reportedly canceled his visit to Dubai on December 1-3 for the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change due to health problems. The Vatican Press Office issued a written statement on the Pope's visit to Dubai this weekend after suffering from influenza for some time.

"Although the Pope's general clinical condition has improved in terms of the flu and inflammation in his respiratory tract, doctors have asked him not to attend the COP28 in Dubai in the coming days. "Pope Francis has received the doctors' request with great regret and this trip has been canceled," the statement said.

The Pope, who has been suffering from influenza since last week, underwent check-ups at Gemelli Hospital in Rome on November 25. On November 26, Pope Francis recited the Angelus prayer from the window of his office overlooking St. Peter's Square on Sundays from his residence and with the help of an attendant.

The spiritual leader of Catholics has been hospitalized twice this year for different reasons. The 86-year-old Pope was first admitted to Gemelli Hospital on March 29 with shortness of breath and was discharged on April 1 after being treated for a respiratory infection. Pope Francis then underwent a laparotomy and prosthesis placement operation on the abdominal wall on June 7, again at Gemelli Hospital, this time due to a hernia that developed due to the incision in his abdomen after his large intestine surgery in 2021, and was discharged on June 16.
