The Gotham Awards, organized by the Gotham Film and Media Institute, were presented last night. Veteran actor Robert De Niro's speech at the award ceremony did not go as planned. De Niro surprised everyone with his unexpected exit.

"THEY CUT MY SPEECH" The 80-year-old Oscar winner took to the stage at a ceremony in New York to present the "Historical Landmark and Tribute to the Creator" award for Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, in which he co-starred with Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. De Niro read his prepared speech on stage after a feature-length video of Osage chief Geoffrey Standing Bear was played and the beginning of his speech was cut off.

The famous actor then took out his phone and read the uncut version of the speech on his phone. "History is no longer history. The truth is not the truth and even the truth is being replaced by alternative facts. It is driven by conspiracy theories and ugliness," De Niro began:

"In Florida, young students are taught that slaves develop skills that can be used for personal gain. The entertainment industry is not immune to this festering disease. Duke John Wayne famously said about Native Americans: 'I don't think we were wrong to take this great country from them. There were a lot of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.'"
