Norman Lear, a famous producer known for his sitcoms such as 'All in the Family' and 'The Jeffersons' in the 1970s, has died at his home in Los Angeles.

Norman Lear's family said in a statement: "Norman lived a life of curiosity, perseverance and empathy. He loved our country deeply and spent a lifetime helping to protect its founding ideals of justice and equality.

He began his career in the early days of live television and pursued not a bright ideal, but a passion for writing about the real lives of Americans."

Norman Lear's programs dealt with issues such as racism, feminism and social inequalities that had not yet dared to be tackled in those years. Lear produced the films 'The Princess Bride' and 'Fried Green Tomatoes' and was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for 1967's 'Divorce the American Way'.
