The government lost a confidence vote in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament. There were 190 votes in favor of the Morawiecki-led government and 266 against.

The Sejm will now nominate a new prime minister. Donald Tusk, supported by the Civic Coalition, Third Way and the Left Party, is almost certain to be the new candidate.

Later today, the Sejm is expected to nominate Tusk as the prime ministerial candidate. Tusk, who served as prime minister in the Civic Platform governments between 2007 and 2014, will present his government's program to the Sejm on December 12, followed by a vote of confidence.

Tusk and his cabinet are expected to be sworn in by Polish President Andrzej Duda on December 13. Following the elections held on October 15, Polish President Andrzej Duda gave the task of forming a government to current Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, a representative of the Law and Justice Party, which came first in the elections but failed to secure a parliamentary majority. Morawiecki needed the support of an absolute majority in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, to win a vote of confidence.
