Hakala made a statement about her condition on her social media account after she was seriously injured in a match on November 24.

Stating that she has lost function in her hands and arms, the 26-year-old athlete said, "I may have to sit in a wheelchair for the rest of my life."

Sanni Hakala won bronze medals at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympic Games with the Finnish Women's National Team.

In October, Adam Johnson, who played for the British professional ice hockey club Nottingham Panthers, died when his opponent's skate hit his neck during a match.
