Nicholas Puech, heir to the world-famous design house Hermes, has made a decision about the future of the company.

According to the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Genève, Nicolas Puech, a descendant of Thierry Hermès, who founded the luxury French fashion house in 1837, wants to leave most of his fortune to his former gardener, whom he plans to adopt.

161ST RICHEST PERSON IN THE WORLD According to the information provided, Puech owns 5.7 percent of Hermès' share capital. However small, this makes him the largest individual shareholder in the company. Forbes estimates Puech's net worth at $11.7 billion, making him the 161st richest person in the world.

The housekeeper has worked for Puech for decades and has been his gardener, handyman and housing manager, Tribune de Genève reported. The 51-year-old man, originally from Morocco, is married and has two children. The couple has become Puech's only family, and he has referred to them as his "children" and "adopted son," the newspaper reported.

HE GAVE THE COUPLE MORE THAN 1.6 MILLION DOLLARS According to the newspaper, Puech gave the couple more than 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million) in 2015 to buy a villa in Marrakech, Morocco. The couple also owns several properties and about 50 pieces of farmland in Spain and Portugal, as well as a villa in Montreux, Switzerland, worth more than $4.5 million.

According to the report, Puech has told the lawyer to start adoption proceedings and is waiting for the authorities to make a decision. If successful, the Tribune de Genève reported, the gardener could inherit at least half of Puech's fortune.

Puech had previously agreed to leave his fortune to the foundation he founded in 2011. The Isocrates Foundation funds investigative journalism in the public interest and Puech serves as its president. Hermès posted revenues of 11.6 billion euros (about $12.7 billion) and net profit of 3.4 billion euros ($3.7 billion) in 2022.
