Google announced a policy update in May on the grounds that accounts that had not been used for a long time were likely to be compromised and announced that it would delete Gmail accounts that had not been active for more than 24 months. The company will start deleting these accounts as of December.

Last May, Google published a blog post saying that accounts that have not been used for a long time are much more at risk of being compromised. The tech giant announced that it would therefore make policy changes.

Google's policy change will affect Gmail accounts that have not been active for a long time. Accounts that have not been used for 24 months, more than 2 years, will soon be deleted. Millions of Gmail accounts will be deleted in December.

Google announced that unused accounts will be deleted as of December 2023. So less than a month later, millions of accounts that have not been active for 24 months will be removed.

Before this policy change, the company did not directly delete accounts that had not been active for a long time. Instead, it was only removing the content within the account. However, due to the possibility of being hacked, the accounts themselves will now be deleted. Accounts to be deleted will also be informed before the application.

It should be noted that this will only affect personal accounts. This will not happen with accounts such as organizations and businesses.

How can you keep your Google accounts active? If you are actively logging into your Google account, your account is safe. However, apart from that, the only thing you need to do to prevent your account from being deleted is to be active. For this, you can do the following;

Reading or sending emails Using Google Drive Watching a YouTube video linked to the account Downloading an application from the Google Play Store Using Google Search Use Sign in with Google to sign in to a third-party app or service.
