Floods hit the Australian state of Queensland. Queensland officials said that heavy rains caused floods at some points in the city of Cairns, the tourism centre north of the state capital Brisbane, where about 170 thousand people live.

With the approaching tide and ongoing rainfall, it was stated that properties in the region may also experience flooding, while residents were advised to move to higher ground in a statement made by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).

In the statement made by Cairns Local Disaster Management, it was announced that tens of thousands of people in the region were without electricity due to heavy rains. Noting that many houses, vehicles and bridges were flooded, it was warned that "Electricity, water, sewerage and telephone services may be cut in the region".

Weather forecasters in Australia predicted "life-threatening flash flooding" in Cairns, which opens to the Great Barrier Reef, and said that later today, water levels could exceed the 4.1 metre flood peak recorded in 1971.
