The UK's media watchdog, Ofcom, has recommended face scanning to prevent children from accessing porn sites. According to a survey, the average age of children in the UK who are exposed to pornography for the first time is 13, which is a cause for concern.

But explicit pornography site Pornhub said that collecting "sensitive personal information" in this way could compromise user safety. Those who study personal data and security have also criticized the proposal. They said that if the data collected for age verification were leaked to third parties, it could have "catastrophic" consequences. Porn is also watched during office hours According to a recent Ofcom report, around 14 million people in the UK watch porn online, a fifth of them during office hours.

But easier access to porn also has consequences for children. According to a survey by the Children's Commissioner, one in 10 children are exposed to porn by the age of nine. The Online Safety Act also demands that social media platforms and search engines protect children from harmful content. Ofcom has published a summary of how it expects companies to comply with the new regulations, which will come into force in 2025. It said age checks must be "effective in accurately determining whether a particular user is a child". Age checks should not just be a matter of clicking a button that says you are an adult, it said.

Among the methods that can be used are the following: Showing a passport or ID Checking whether the age restriction on the user's phone has recently been removed Credit card check Age-verifying digital identity check Age estimation technology using facial scans is another alternative. When this system is used, if a person is found to be underage, additional checks may be requested.
