Why shouldn't potatoes and onions be kept together? Potatoes and onions are foods that are usually stored together. However, storing potatoes and onions together is a wrong storage method. Because when onions and potatoes are together, the shelf life of both foods is shortened.

The 'ethylene gas' in onions causes potatoes to rot, spoil and sprout quickly. The potato therefore becomes unusable. The high moisture content in potatoes also liquefies onions.

To prevent potatoes and onions from rotting, try to keep them at opposite poles in your kitchen. You should also keep foods such as apples, apricots, pears and bananas away from foods with high levels of ethylene gas, such as onions.
