It was announced that 40 thousand poultry will be culled as a precautionary measure after the highly contagious H5 mutation of avian influenza was detected in a farm in Japan.

After a large number of poultry were found dead on a farm in the city of Kashima in Japan's Saga prefecture, tests revealed the highly contagious H5 mutation of avian influenza.

The provincial government announced that 40 thousand poultry will be culled as a precautionary measure, while the area around the farm where the outbreak broke out was declared a limited movement area.

In Japan, where the first case of bird flu was confirmed on October 28 last year, the outbreak spread to 26 prefectures. A record 17 million poultry were culled, slowing down egg supply and pushing up egg prices.
