Fundraising Goal Exceeded for Man Rescued from Captivity

A staggering amount of over $112,000 has been collected for the 32-year-old man who was reportedly held captive in his stepmother’s house in Connecticut for more than two decades. The man managed to escape by setting the house on fire before seeking help. The fundraiser initiated by Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury aims to reach $120,000, with the support of approximately 2,000 generous donors. This financial aid will contribute to covering the necessary expenses for his medical care, dental treatment, counseling, therapy, housing, living costs, and legal representation to seek justice for the abuse he endured.
The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, endured extreme suffering during his captivity, lived in a small storage space without proper sustenance, and had to resort to eating from garbage cans and drinking toilet water to survive. Weighing a mere 69 pounds, he was rescued by the fire department after his attempt to break free by setting the house on fire on February 17. Authorities discovered a locked room in the house where the victim had allegedly been confined since the age of 11, describing the situation as one of the worst cases of abuse they had encountered.
The man’s stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, has been arrested and charged with serious offenses including assault, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, cruelty, and reckless endangerment. Despite posting bail, she plans to plead not guilty at her upcoming court appearance scheduled for March 26. The survivor is now on the path to healing, rebuilding his life, and finding peace, with every donation playing a crucial role in aiding his recovery journey.
