Peter Mutabazi, a foster dad, grew up in Uganda facing poverty. Despite his initial doubts about being a single parent, he became a foster dad to help children in need. Mutabazi adopted his son, Anthony, who was returned to the hospital at age 11. He has since adopted two siblings, Luke and Isabella, and continues to support foster youth. Mutabazi’s journey began with the intent to offer temporary refuge to children in need, rooted in his childhood experiences of poverty and hardship in Uganda. A stranger’s kindness changed his life, leading him to excel in school and eventually come to the United States on a scholarship. Mutabazi felt a sense of responsibility towards children trapped in neglect and pain, which motivated him to become a foster parent. Initially believing adoption was only for married Caucasians, he found his calling in fostering and providing hope to children in need. The emotional toll of children coming and going was challenging, but Mutabazi’s determination to make a difference kept him going.
Mutabazi never imagined that a simple phone call would alter the course of his life. Just days after the children he was fostering had left, he received a call that would lead him on a new journey. Initially hesitant, he agreed to take in a child who needed a home, despite his reservations. The boy arrived at his home, and although Mutabazi tried to keep his distance, the child’s words touched his heart. The boy expressed his desire for Mutabazi to be his father, a gesture that melted his heart and made him realize his true calling.
As time passed, Mutabazi’s bond with the boy, Anthony, deepened, leading to the decision to adopt him. This act of love and compassion opened the door for Mutabazi to foster and adopt more children, including siblings Luke and Isabella. Despite the challenges and obstacles they faced, Mutabazi’s dedication to helping children in need remained unwavering.
Through his social media platforms and fundraising efforts, Mutabazi continues to share his story and support foster children. His own experiences of overcoming adversity have fueled his passion for providing a safe and loving home for those who have felt unwanted and unloved. Mutabazi’s journey from a street kid to a dedicated foster father is a testament to the transformative power of love and compassion.
“That is why I currently provide room transformations for foster youth, a lot of whom have experienced 12 or more placements before reaching 18,” he explains. “By doing this, we aim to offer them a sense of dignity for the first time.
