Actor Adam Pally paid tribute to his late friend and frequent collaborator, filmmaker Jeff Baena, in an Instagram post on Jan. 5. Pally, who worked with Baena on several projects, remembered him as a “sweet Jewish boy from Miami,” a mentor, and a passionate basketball player with a unique jump shot. Baena, who was married to Aubrey Plaza, passed away at the age of 47 on Jan. 4 in Los Angeles. The cause of his death was ruled a suicide.
Pally described Baena as a talented director with a keen eye for detail and a knack for bringing people together. He praised Baena’s authenticity in his work, noting that he always strived for truth and never shied away from honesty. Pally expressed his sorrow for Plaza, the Baena family, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with Baena.
In addition to their collaborations, Baena co-wrote the film “I Heart Huckabees” in 2004 and directed projects like “Horse Girl” and “Spin Me Round.” Plaza and Baena, who were together for over a decade, shared a deep understanding of each other’s work and journey in the entertainment industry. Plaza highlighted the challenges and rewards of working with a partner in the same field, emphasizing the importance of balance in their relationship.
One aspect of our careers that stands out is the necessity of independence, taking short breaks, pursuing individual interests, and then regrouping,” Plaza remarked. “This dynamic can be enjoyable due to its unpredictability. Maintaining a healthy balance is crucial, as prolonged separation is not ideal. However, with the right approach, it is possible for it to function effectively.” This statement was originally featured in People magazine.
