France is currently facing a monumental challenge in conducting rescue operations on its overseas territory of Mayotte following the devastating impact of Cyclone Chido. The small group of islands located in the Indian Ocean has been severely affected by the cyclone, prompting Acting Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau to issue a statement on Tuesday.

Cyclone Chido made landfall on the islands with wind speeds reaching up to 220 kilometers per hour on Saturday, causing significant damage to the simple sheet metal houses that many of the 310,000 residents call home. Meanwhile, Mozambique has also been grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Chido, which struck its northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula with winds clocking in at 240 kilometers per hour. The Mozambican authorities have so far reported a death toll of 27, and rescue operations are currently underway to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
The Institute for National Disaster Management in Mozambique has highlighted the ongoing nature of the rescue efforts, emphasizing that it may take time to fully estimate the scale of the destruction caused by the cyclone. The situation remains fluid, with emergency response teams working tirelessly to reach affected areas and provide aid to those in need.
UNICEF, the United Nations’ children’s organization, has reported that a staggering 175,000 people have been impacted by the cyclone in Mozambique. Additionally, more than 24,000 homes have been destroyed, along with numerous schools and health facilities, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
Mozambique’s state-owned electricity provider, EDM, has confirmed that approximately 200,000 people have been left without power as a result of the cyclone, further compounding the challenges faced by communities already reeling from the devastation. The lack of essential services such as electricity further hampers relief efforts and underscores the urgent need for international support and solidarity in the wake of this natural disaster.
