A former student from Duck River, Tennessee, has stepped up to become a surrogate for a mysterious benefactor in need. Ashley and Spencer Totty, residents of Duck River, have longed for a family beyond the cows on their farm since they got married in October 2014. Ashley, a former high school teacher, and her husband, a utility lineman, faced challenges with unexplained infertility, enduring the heartbreak of five miscarriages and failed in vitro fertilization treatments.
Their dream of having a child seemed out of reach until a surprising message arrived. Spencer described it as coming “completely out of the blue,” but Ashley believes it was a message from God. The note, sent through Facebook Messenger, was from a former student, 27-year-old Hannah Dearman, who had heard of the Tottys’ struggles and offered to be a surrogate out of love and compassion.
In her message, Dearman expressed her desire to help Ashley fulfill her dream of motherhood, stating, “If you ever need a surrogate, I’d love to help you become a mom.” Despite the unexpected offer, Ashley was touched by the gesture and felt that, at that point, nothing seemed too far-fetched.
Having fond memories of her caring and loving teacher, Dearman felt compelled to assist in any way she could, even offering to carry Ashley’s baby free of charge. The selfless act led to the birth of Sophie Leigh Totty on July 29, 2024. Sophie, now seven months old, brought immense joy to the Totty family, serving as a testament to the power of kindness and the possibility of miracles.
