Former Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator Al Golden Wins Surprise Broyles Award

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — In a twist of mystery and intrigue, the prestigious Broyles Award has found its latest recipient in former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden. The announcement has taken the college football world by storm, as Golden emerges as the unexpected winner of the esteemed title for the nation’s top assistant coach.

Golden’s coaching prowess was on full display as he played a pivotal role in guiding Notre Dame to the national championship game last month. His exceptional leadership and strategic acumen did not go unnoticed, ultimately leading to his deserved recognition with the Broyles Award. Following his successful stint with the Fighting Irish, Golden has since embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career, taking on the role of defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals.

During his tenure at Notre Dame, Golden’s impact was undeniable, with the team achieving remarkable defensive statistics. The Fighting Irish boasted an impressive second-place ranking in scoring defense, allowing only 14.3 points per game, and a commendable ninth-place standing in total defense, limiting opponents to just 298.3 yards per game.

Among the other notable finalists vying for the revered award were Marcus Arroyo, the offensive coordinator for Arizona State, Bryant Haines, the defensive coordinator for Indiana, Tim Banks, the defensive coordinator for Tennessee, and Pete Kwiatkowski, the defensive coordinator for Texas. The rigorous selection process was overseen by a distinguished committee comprising former coaches, esteemed members of the Football Writers Association of America, and respected broadcasters.

Al Golden now joins the illustrious ranks of past recipients as the 29th assistant coach to be honored with the Broyles Award since its establishment in 1996. The award, named in honor of former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles, serves as a testament to the legacy of excellence in developing assistant coaches within the realm of college football.
