Justin Fields has signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the New York Jets, with $30 million guaranteed, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Fields, who is set to turn 26 in 2025, has a career record of 14-30 in 44 starts. He was initially picked by the Chicago Bears as the 11th overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft and spent his first three seasons with the team. Despite completing only 60.3% of his passes during his time in Chicago, Fields excelled as a dual-threat quarterback, joining the ranks of Lamar Jackson and Michael Vick by rushing for over 1,000 yards in a single season (1,143 in 2022).
Following the Bears’ acquisition of the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft via a trade involving Bryce Young, they drafted Caleb Williams and subsequently traded Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. In exchange, the Steelers offered a 2025 sixth-round pick for the young quarterback. Fields began the 2024 season as the Steelers’ starting QB, where he recorded a 4-2 record in the first six weeks, completing 66.3% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, along with 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns on 55 carries.
However, Fields was benched by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in favor of Russell Wilson after Week 7 due to Wilson’s return from a calf injury. Fields saw minimal playing time following this move, taking just 15 snaps for the remainder of the season, including the playoffs, where he ran for 58 yards on seven carries but failed to complete his only two pass attempts.
Looking ahead, Fields will aim to solidify his starting position and improve upon his career-best 65.8% completion rate from the previous season.
