In a touching ceremony to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragic murder of a West Midlands Police officer, the grandson of PC Albert Willits expressed his pride in the event. PC Willits, a dedicated officer with the Wolverhampton Borough Police, was only 24 years old when he was fatally shot while bravely trying to apprehend three young men on Vicarage Road on January 18, 1925.
David Willits, the grandson of PC Willits, described the service held in honor of his grandfather as deeply moving. The ceremony took place at the Wolverhampton Central Police Station and was attended by members of his family, as well as fellow police officers and staff. Mr. Willits reflected on the significance of the occasion, stating, “It was amazing to think it was 100 years ago and to have a service dedicated to him and his memory was wonderful.”
The service was marked by moments of reverence, including a guard of honor, the playing of the Last Post, and a prayer led by a force chaplain. Following the service, representatives from the West Midlands Police Federation laid a wreath at the grave of Albert Willits and shared a few words in his memory.
Corinne Brazier, the heritage manager who played a key role in organizing the anniversary service, emphasized the importance of remembering Albert’s story as a poignant reminder of the dedication and sacrifices made by police officers in their mission to protect the public, prevent crime, and bring criminals to justice. She highlighted the significance of honoring Albert and ensuring that his legacy continues to be cherished as an integral part of the policing family.
The event served as a tribute to a forgotten hero whose memory was brought back to life through the heartfelt gestures and words of those who gathered to pay their respects. As the community joins in commemorating the life and service of PC Albert Willits, his legacy remains steadfast and enduring within the annals of West Midlands Police history.
