However, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated on Monday that they quickly realized that the caravan was essentially a criminal ploy. AFP’s Deputy Commissioner of National Security, Krissy Barrett, mentioned that investigators from the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team believed the caravan was part of a contrived terrorism plan based on existing information, the ease of discovery, the visibility of the explosives, and the absence of a detonator. Despite this knowledge, the police did not disclose their suspicions to the public out of caution due to receiving tips about related terror schemes. They now believe these tips were also fabricated. The fake caravan scheme involved multiple individuals with varying degrees of involvement, who planned to acquire a caravan, load it with explosives and antisemitic materials, place it in a specific location, and then alert law enforcement about an alleged terror threat against Jewish Australians. Ms. Barrett described it as an intricate plan orchestrated by organized criminals, both domestic and international, with the plot leader keeping a distance and enlisting local criminals to carry out certain tasks. This leader is a recognized figure in organized crime. Although no arrests have been made in connection to the incident, the police have ongoing targets in Australia and overseas. Ms. Barrett emphasized that criminals often use information exchange with law enforcement for personal gain, particularly to reduce sentences. While contacted for further insight into the motives behind the caravan hoax, the AFP declined to comment. Ms. Barrett condemned the impact of the fake plot on the Jewish community, expressing concern over the unwarranted suspicion faced by other communities. In a separate development, New South Wales police detained 14 individuals as part of Strike Force Pearl, an operation initiated in December 2024 to investigate antisemitic hate crimes in Sydney following a series of attacks at the end of that year.
