An explosion occurred at a nickel plant on Sulawesi Island in Indonesia. It is learned that 13 people lost their lives and 38 people were injured in the explosion at the plant, which is owned by Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel (ITSS).

In a statement made by the managers of Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), an industrial area where nickel processing-based industries are located, it was stated that the explosion occurred at 05.30 local time when the workers were repairing the furnace and placing the plates, while 8 workers who lost their lives were Indonesian and 5 were Chinese.

According to preliminary investigations, the explosion was caused by some liquid accumulated in the furnace, while it was stated that other explosions occurred after the first explosion due to the presence of many oxygen cylinders in the facility. The fire that broke out after the explosion was extinguished at 09.10 local time.

It was stated that the investigation into the incident is continuing in coordination with the parties and all treatment costs of the victims will be covered.
