Exciting Reveal of the Enigmatic Oscar Nominees Lineup

The 97th annual Academy Awards nominees were unveiled on Jan. 23, with “Emilia Pérez,” “A Complete Unknown,” and “Conclave” leading the pack in total nominations. This announcement came after the nominations had to be postponed twice due to wildfires in the Los Angeles area.

Topping the list with a total of 13 nominations is “Emilia Pérez,” a crime musical focusing on a cartel leader undergoing a transition. This achievement is just one nomination short of tying the record for the most nominations from a single film, a feat previously accomplished by “Titanic,” “All About Eve,” and “La La Land,” with 14 nominations each.

Actress Karla Sofía Gascón, portraying the lead role, made history by becoming the first transgender woman to receive a nomination in any acting category at the Oscars. She joins a competitive group that includes Cynthia Erivo from “Wicked” and Demi Moore, whose performance in the unsettling horror film “The Substance” has sparked discussions about the industry’s treatment of older actresses. Both Moore and the film were highly anticipated to secure nominations in the top Oscar categories.

Following “Emilia Pérez” in total nominations were “The Brutalist” and “Wicked,” each receiving 10 nods. These three, along with “The Substance,” were among the 10 films nominated for the Best Picture award, alongside “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Nickel Boys,” and “I’m Still Here.”

“Emilia Pérez” clinched four Golden Globes in January, including Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña’s performance. “The Brutalist,” a 215-minute epic about a Holocaust survivor’s post-WWII journey to America, secured Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Drama, and lead actor Adrian Brody was also a recipient. Both Saldaña and Brody have earned nominations in their respective Oscar categories.

The live announcement was hosted by actors Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott.
