Exciting News Uncovered at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago

My fascination with beluga whales dates back to my childhood days, thanks to Raffi’s iconic “Baby Beluga” song that resonated with many kids from the 80s and 90s. Little did I know that these baby belugas also call the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago their home, where a special little one is making a big splash!

Months ago, proud beluga parents Naya and Beethoven welcomed their adorable baby beluga into the Shedd family. After confirming the young beluga’s gender last month, the aquarium embarked on a quest to find the perfect name for him. And on March 6, the wait was over—introducing Opus!

Opus, a name synonymous with musical compositions, pays tribute to his father Beethoven and highlights belugas’ unique vocalizations, earning them the title of “canaries of the sea.” Following a naming contest where over 50% of voters chose this classical music-inspired name, Opus was officially christened, symbolizing a masterpiece born from his parents’ love.

Since his birth in July, Opus has captivated hearts with his milestones and endearing presence. As fans eagerly anticipate his progress, Opus continues to grow under the care of the aquarium staff, learning vital skills such as communicating through chirps, clicks, whistles, and squeals.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of Opus among his pod members at Shedd Aquarium, where he stands out as the smallest and darkest beluga. Cheers to Opus and his bright future ahead!
