When it comes to warm and inviting color schemes, Farrow & Ball’s range is truly exceptional. The brand has had several standout successes over the years, such as Elephant’s Breath, a calming gray with hints of lilac; Down Pipe, a deep gray infused with blue; and Ammonite, a serene gray-beige. Their collection of 132 meticulously chosen hues is constantly reviewed and refined after thorough consideration and experimentation. And now, the time has come once again as Farrow & Ball is introducing 12 new foundational shades to its already impressive lineup after more than two years.
The “New Colours” selection is centered around the small everyday moments in our lives. According to Joa Studholme, the brand’s color curator, “We all spend more time at home,” emphasizing the importance of finding joy in the simple things that surround us. This new palette features richly pigmented yet slightly toned-down hues, perfectly aligning with the ongoing trend towards earthy tones in interior design.
Examples of this concept include Douter, a harmonious blend of green and gray, and Dibber, a green with brown undertones described by Studholme as embodying a sense of tranquility and groundedness. The naming of Dibber pays homage to a gardening tool used for planting seedlings, emphasizing its connection to the earth.
The collection also includes more vibrant options, like the soft orange Marmello, a color already adorning Studholme’s kitchen dresser. Naperon falls within a similar color family, offering a weathered terracotta shade that exudes warmth and homeliness. Duster presents an earthy yellow, while Kakelugn adds a hint of pale blue.
As for the reintroduction of three archival colors, Etruscan Red, Sap Green, and Broccoli Brown mark a significant decision for Farrow & Ball, being the first time the brand has resurrected past hues. Etruscan Red holds sentimental value as it adorned the brand’s paint tins previously, creating a nostalgic full-circle moment, as Charlotte Cosby, the brand’s creative director, notes.
Neutral tones like Scallop, a white with subtle pink undertones, and Sizing, a white with blue hints, are expected to be popular choices. Studholme describes Scallop as “incredibly precious” and “magical,” while Sizing provides a cool-toned backdrop ideal for various settings.
Cosby highlights the collection’s overarching theme of familiarity with these universal neutrals, noting, “They all feel quite familiar—you can put them up and they feel like your favorite jumper. You have that lovely relationship.”
