Exciting Comeback of a Mysterious Color

The color yellow has always held a special place in my heart. In my grandparents’ beach condo from 1979, the kitchen’s warm buttery laminate flooring set a cheerful atmosphere for all the delicious meals my grandmother prepared: sweet cubes of fudge, perfectly cooked crab legs, and her famous hot dog chili. While yellow, like red, hasn’t always been a popular choice in design, often overshadowed by classic blues and greens (which is understandable) and sometimes even greige (unfairly disregarded!), it is set to make a vibrant return in 2025, bringing joy to many. Southern designers are already finding creative ways to incorporate yellow into their projects and are eager to share their tips for decorating with this misunderstood hue.

Meet the Design Experts:
Amanda Louise Campbell, a designer from Greenville, South Carolina.
Courtney Davis, a designer based in Palm Beach and Jupiter, Florida.

Why Yellow is Gaining Popularity:
“A winning yellow is inviting and warm,” says Amanda Louise Campbell. “Despite its energy, I believe it can also evoke feelings of calm and nostalgia.” Courtney Davis also appreciates yellow’s warmth and timeless appeal, noting how it can add sophistication to a room when used in moderation.

Tips for Decorating with Yellow:
– Start Small if You’re Unsure: Campbell suggests introducing yellow gradually, such as through a lamp, vase, or decorative items, to add vibrancy to a space.
– Embrace Color-Drenching: Davis recommends using yellow boldly on walls, trims, and ceilings for a striking effect, advising to choose richer shades like Farrow & Ball’s Citron or Benjamin Moore’s Golden Groves.
– Explore Different Shades: Campbell emphasizes selecting yellows with grounded undertones for painted spaces, like Sherwin-Williams’ Convivial Yellow (SW 6393), and suggests treating walls and trims with the same color for a modern twist.

Don’t limit yourself to one tone; embrace the full spectrum of yellow to bring warmth and character to your living spaces.

“Yellow is one of the colors that can be utilized with various shades combined in a single room,” notes Davis. “Layering different yellows together can enhance depth and generate a cozy, inviting glow.” Check out the full article on Southern Living.
