During a recent interview on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast, Dee Wallace, known for her role as Mary in the beloved 1982 classic “E.T.,” revealed that there was originally a subplot in the film involving a romantic relationship between her character and the alien E.T. Wallace expressed that there were hints of this storyline remaining in the final cut, including a scene where E.T. places Reese’s Pieces on her bedside table while she sleeps. However, Wallace felt uncomfortable with the suggested intimacy in the scene and raised her concerns with director Steven Spielberg to ensure the film maintained its family-friendly tone. She emphasized the importance of preserving the purity of “E.T.” and ultimately reached a compromise with Spielberg, writer Melissa Mathison, and producer Kathleen Kennedy to adjust the scene accordingly. Despite the creative differences, “E.T.” went on to win multiple Academy Awards and solidify its place in film history. Wallace, who continued to have a successful acting career post-“E.T.,” starred in several notable films such as “Cujo,” “Critters,” and “The Howling.”
