Earnings Disclosure: “Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.” How can one go about decorating a circular bathroom and sitting area? Chicago-based designer Erin Shakoor suggests embracing the curves and incorporating a captivating narrative within the space. Entrusted with the task of reimagining a circular room for the 2025 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in Palm Beach, Shakoor approached the challenge with enthusiasm. “I decided to accentuate the room’s roundness in some aspects, while in others, I opted to create contrast by juxtaposing straight, rigid elements against the curved walls,” she shares.
The concept of juxtaposition became a pivotal theme in the space as Shakoor skillfully balanced masculine and feminine energies using texture, form, and color. By combining rough, tactile surfaces with softer hues and blending Brutalist-inspired artworks with sumptuous draperies from Romo, Shakoor achieved a harmonious interplay of contrasting elements. She believes in incorporating vintage or pre-loved items in every design, ensuring a fusion of futuristic aesthetics with classic touches for an inviting living space.
Shakoor envisioned the sitting room as an artist’s salon and miniature gallery, reflective of the diverse tastes and experiences of its inhabitants. “I aim to spark curiosity and inspire viewers to explore unconventional design choices,” she explains. The bathroom features Artistic Tile on the walls and floor, a bespoke curved vanity in Primestones’ Nero Marquina marble, and a luxurious matte black Kohler Veil smart toilet for ultimate comfort. Shakoor’s selection of wall tiles pays homage to her conceptual clients’ collections of West African and Japanese textiles, infusing the space with cultural influences.
While bold in her design choices, Shakoor masterfully blends various design styles to create a unique sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. The circular powder room stands as a testament to her ability to blend diverse elements seamlessly, offering a space where one can refresh, indulge, and escape from the ordinary.
