This particular type of mist emerges when warm, moist air travels over a colder surface. This occurrence can take place when a mild air mass drifts over an area blanketed in snow, or when humid, tropical air glides over frigid ocean waters. The chilly ground or water cools the air above, causing the temperature to decrease close to the dew point, resulting in the formation of a dense, low-hanging mist.
Another intriguing aspect of advection mist is its mobility. Given that it materializes in the presence of winds, it tends to drift along with the breeze. One might observe it meandering across both land and sea akin to a wandering spirit. Along the western coast of the United States, where it is most prevalent, this mist can linger for extended periods, engulfing coastal highways and concealing harbors. At sea, it is famously referred to as sea mist and is renowned for severely limiting visibility to nearly zero, posing navigation challenges for mariners. Moreover, when the wind carries this mist inland, coastal communities may find themselves ensconced in an eerie haze that overstays its welcome much longer than the typical morning mist.
