Despite being one of the most popular types of pets, cats have often found themselves in a bit of a dubious position when compared to their canine counterparts. This could be attributed to the habit of many individuals to draw parallels between cats and dogs. There is a prevalent notion that cats lack the affectionate nature synonymous with dogs, are incapable of performing tricks like dogs, and are unlikely to respond when called—similar to dogs. However, cats exhibit all these behaviors characteristic of felines, and they excel at it. It is not uncommon to hear people emphasizing the dog-like attributes of certain cat breeds, almost suggesting that the pinnacle of feline excellence lies in resembling dogs. Contrary to this belief.
The cat showcased in the accompanying video is an endearing Ragdoll feline, exuding excitement upon the return of her family, signaling the commencement of a well-rehearsed routine. The footage captures her sudden alertness upon hearing the car pull up, followed by a brisk dash to the door where she playfully exposes her fluffy white belly, rolling around in anticipation of affection. Subsequently, she gracefully hops onto the adjacent counter, eagerly awaiting cuddles and perhaps a treat or two.
This warm reception ritual mirrors the exact sequence of events observed in my own distinctly non-pedigree cat when her beloved human, my daughter, arrives home. Just like the Ragdoll in the video, my cat eagerly awaits at the window, then rushes to the entrance to engage in a complex greeting ceremony involving rolling around, leaping onto elevated surfaces, and vocalizing loud meows to solicit attention and petting.
Could it be possible that my once-stray alley cat harbors a hidden Ragdoll lineage? But is this behavior truly akin to that of a dog, or rather an expression of affection from any adoring creature upon reuniting with a cherished family member? Why do we tend to liken every affectionate gesture demonstrated by a cat to that of a dog? Perhaps such actions are simply inherent to feline behavior and deserve acknowledgment as such.
Ragdoll cats, a large and fluffy breed renowned for their Persian-like beauty and gentle, sociable demeanor tailored to suit families and children, are often lauded for their dog-like qualities. Nonetheless, I contend that these traits are simply a manifestation of the affectionate and delightful nature inherent in these lovable felines.
While I had always considered myself a fervent “dog person,” it appears that I had underestimated the sheer joy that cats can bring into one’s life.
