Located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Ryan Grubb is once again teaming up with Kalen DeBoer, this time as the offensive coordinator for the renowned Alabama football team. Their previous collaboration saw them guide Washington to a College Football Playoff championship game. The official announcement came on Thursday, with Alabama confirming Grubb’s addition to DeBoer’s coaching staff. Grubb previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under DeBoer at Washington from 2022 to 2023.
Expressing his confidence in the new appointment, DeBoer stated, “Ryan Grubb has been someone that I have trusted for a long time, and adding him to our staff only enhances the caliber of coaches we have here at Alabama. He is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in the country, and I am excited to witness the impact he will bring to our team going forward.”
During their time at Washington in 2023, DeBoer, Grubb, and star quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who would later become a first-round pick for the Atlanta Falcons in 2024, led the team to the brink of a national title. Following their 34-13 defeat to Michigan in the CFP championship game, DeBoer departed to assume the head coaching role at Alabama. Initially set to join him there, Grubb’s plans were altered when he landed the position of offensive coordinator with the Seattle Seahawks. However, after being let go at the conclusion of the Seahawks’ 2023 season, Grubb now returns to the collegiate level to reunite with DeBoer.
Grubb expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, saying, “I am thankful for the chance to once again work with Coach DeBoer and be part of an offensive staff that I am familiar with. I have full confidence that our coaching staff will position the team for success every time we take the field. I trust in the dedication and hard work of both coaches and players to uphold the high standards set here at Alabama, and I eagerly anticipate stepping onto the field with them.”
The duo of Grubb and DeBoer previously collaborated at Fresno State, where Grubb held various coaching positions from 2017 to 2021, and DeBoer served as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, and eventually head coach. Additionally, Grubb was the offensive line coach at Eastern Michigan from 2014 to 2016.
