Elizabeth Warren’s 180 Questions for Trump’s Treasury Pick Scott Bessent Revealed!

Bessent’s confirmation process has been smoother compared to some of Trump’s other picks, like Pete Hegseth for defense secretary. The Trump team is optimistic that Bessent and other nominees will be confirmed by the Senate quickly after Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20. Senator Warren has requested Bessent to provide detailed written responses to her questions before a Senate Finance committee vote to send the nomination for final approval. It remains uncertain if Bessent will comply, as a representative declined to comment before the release. Warren’s letter focuses on regulations, taxes, and tariffs, with concerns about deregulation in the financial sector and its potential impact on the economy. She questions the effectiveness of Trump’s tax and deregulatory policies in achieving economic growth. Warren also inquires about extending existing tax cuts and their impact on the deficit. Bessent’s past investments and potential conflicts of interest are also subjects of scrutiny, particularly his planned divestment to avoid conflicts if confirmed as Treasury Secretary.

Warren, in a letter to the Guare Group, highlighted the focus on tariffs and Bessent’s stance on them. Bessent publicly expressed support for Trump’s tariff plans, but also raised concerns about potential negative impacts such as inflation. The letter also addressed Bessent’s future responsibilities in overseeing foreign investments, housing, the IRS, and the potential end of government conservatorships of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Additionally, Warren questioned Bessent on his proposal for a “shadow” Fed chair, asking if he still supported the idea introduced during the 2024 campaign. Bessent appeared to backtrack on this concept, affirming that Jerome Powell would serve his full term as Fed Chair until 2026. Warren also raised concerns about potential actions against regulators like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Bessent is scheduled to appear before the Senate Finance Committee for confirmation, facing questions from lawmakers including Warren. The committee’s top Republican, Mike Crapo, voiced support for Trump’s Cabinet selections, while the top Democrat, Ron Wyden, expressed skepticism about Bessent’s appointment. If confirmed, Warren and Bessent may interact again on the Senate banking panel.
