Romania and Bulgaria have officially become full members of the European Union’s border-free Schengen area, marking a significant milestone in their integration into the bloc. The two countries have eliminated land border controls, allowing for seamless travel between their territories and other Schengen member states.
The enlargement of the Schengen area was celebrated with enthusiasm at border posts in Romania and Bulgaria. The European Parliament extended a warm welcome to the two nations, expressing joy at the elimination of border checks for travelers moving between Bulgaria, Romania, and other Schengen countries.
At the symbolic moment of midnight, the interior ministers of Bulgaria and Romania raised a barrier on the Danube Bridge, also known as the Friendship Bridge, which serves as a vital connection point for international trade between the two countries. Fireworks illuminated the sky near the Bulgarian town of Ruse, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the historic event.
Having already eased restrictions on air and sea travel in March, Romania and Bulgaria have now completed the final steps towards full integration into the Schengen area by abolishing land border controls. Austria’s decision to lift its veto on their full membership further facilitated this process, emphasizing the importance of cooperation among EU member states.
The European Commission has lauded the expansion of the Schengen area, emphasizing its positive impact on the European Union’s unity and global presence.
