Off the coast of Northern California in Monterey Bay, something extraordinary recently unfolded. A boat captain captured remarkable footage of thousands of dolphins traveling together in a rare super pod. Among the group were mother dolphins and their offspring, creating a heartwarming spectacle. In the footage, Captain Evan Brodsky, who spotted the super pod, expressed his awe, stating, “This was just such an incredible sighting because of the sheer number of dolphins present. It was truly astonishing.” Brodsky hoped that the drone footage he captured would inspire people to witness these wild and free dolphins in their natural environment.
The sighting occurred while Captain Brodsky was on a scouting trip around 10 miles away from Monterey Bay Harbor. Among the diverse dolphins spotted, the unique northern right whale dolphin species stood out. The video drew attention and admiration from viewers, with many expressing amazement at the beauty of the dolphins swimming together.
Some commenters shared their own encounters with similar dolphin gatherings. One user recounted a memorable experience of witnessing hundreds, if not thousands, of dolphins while surfing. The northern right whale dolphins, a rare species without dorsal fins, are typically found in the deep waters of the Pacific Ocean, ranging from Western North America to Russia and Japan, favoring cold to warm waters.
These acrobatic swimmers are known for their graceful leaps of over 20 feet and remarkable speeds, capable of swimming up to 16 mph on average and reaching bursts of 22 mph. The northern right whale dolphins are often seen in groups of 100 to 200, with occasional gatherings of up to 3,000. The species, estimated at around 68,000 in the Northern Pacific Ocean, are truly a marvel to behold.
In this particular super pod, the northern right whale dolphins were accompanied by other species such as Pacific white-sided dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, and Risso’s dolphins. Marine biologist Colleen Talty suggested that the dolphins might have grouped together for feeding, socializing, or protection against predators. The presence of baby dolphins in the group added a special touch to the sighting, making it even more remarkable.
