Helen Mirren Disapproves of Having a Female James Bond
With Amazon MGM preparing for a fresh reboot of the James Bond series, Helen Mirren has revealed her dislike for the franchise due to its portrayal of women. While the idea of a female taking on the iconic 007 role has been discussed in Hollywood, Mirren has expressed her lack of interest in such casting, citing the character’s history as a deterrent.
In a recent interview with The Standard, Mirren criticized the James Bond series, stating, “The whole series of James Bond, it was not my thing. It really wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond. … The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism.” Mirren emphasized the importance of showcasing real stories of remarkable women who have worked in similar arenas, like those in the Secret Service.
Mirren, currently starring alongside former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan in the Paramount+ crime series “MobLand,” reserved praise for Brosnan, describing him as a “massive fan” and highlighting his talent and personality. She also commended Daniel Craig, another former James Bond, for his gracious nature.
As the James Bond franchise undergoes significant changes, including Amazon MGM taking creative control, Mirren’s perspective offers a unique insight into the ongoing evolution of the iconic spy series.
