Does your canine companion enjoy car rides? While many dogs do, not all are enthusiastic about hitting the road for a trip. There could be various reasons for this, such as feeling confined, experiencing motion sickness, or associating car rides with negative past incidents. However, one aspect that is often overlooked is the type of fuel the vehicle uses.

A recent study conducted by veterinary surgeon Dr. Scott Miller, who is also the resident vet on the UK daytime TV show This Morning, reveals that dogs may prefer traveling in electric vehicles (EVs) over traditional gas and diesel cars, which could potentially contribute to anxiety in dogs.

In the experiment, researchers monitored a dog’s heart rate during car rides in electric, diesel, and gas cars. Mango, a one-year-old working cocker spaniel, was taken on drives around the Dunsfold Aerodrome track, previously known as the test track for the BBC’s Top Gear show. Traveling at speeds reaching 70mph, Mango’s behavior and heart rate were closely observed during each trip. In the Å koda Elroq electric car, his heart rate only increased from a resting 80bpm to 100bpm. However, in the gas and diesel cars, his heart rate spiked to 120bpm and 125bpm, respectively, indicating higher stress levels.

Furthermore, Mango appeared more relaxed in the electric car, lying down almost asleep. In contrast, he seemed more tense in the gas and diesel cars, displaying a stiff posture and anxious behavior.

Dr. Miller commented, “The experiment clearly demonstrates the physical and psychological advantages of traveling in an EV for dogs. Observing Mango’s responses while traveling at the same speed on the same route in different types of vehicles highlighted that electric cars offer a smoother and more calming experience.”

He explained that the lack of mechanical components, reduced vibrations and noise, and spacious interiors of EVs create a calming environment for dogs, leading to a more relaxed and enjoyable travel experience for our furry friends. Dr. Miller also mentioned that the lower center of gravity in EVs can help dogs feel more secure.

Dog behavior expert Anna Webb added, “Mango’s body language clearly indicates his preference for traveling in an EV, where he relaxes on the back seat with soft, semi-closed eyes. In contrast, in traditional fuel-powered cars, he sits upright and tense, displaying signs of stress.”

Whether your vehicle runs on electricity, gas, or diesel, consider these dog car safety tips for securing your furry friend and keeping them cool during car rides.
