What Exactly Is a Sixth Sense?
Contrary to the notion of pets being able to communicate with spirits, the concept of a sixth sense refers to an extraordinary ability beyond the conventional five senses of sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing. Any additional sensory capability is often regarded as a “sixth sense.”
Numerous animals exhibit extraordinary abilities that can be classified as a sixth sense. A study published in Nature in 2023 revealed that a greater number of animals than previously believed may possess the ability to detect the Earth’s magnetic field. Researchers identified a molecule called Flavin Adenine Dinucleotide (FAD) present in many living cells, which plays a role in magnetic sensitivity when incorporated into specific proteins known as cryptochromes. These proteins are thought to aid animals like pigeons and turtles in long-distance navigation by sensing the Earth’s magnetic field. It is now suggested that numerous organisms may contain this molecule.
Professor Richard Baines, a co-lead researcher and neuroscientist at The University of Manchester, states in a press release, “How we perceive the external world, from vision and hearing to touch, taste, and smell, is well understood. However, the identification of which animals possess the ability to sense and respond to a magnetic field remains a mystery.”
While there is still much to discover about how animals sense magnetic fields and underground electric currents, recent research has shed light on these areas, providing valuable insights. Various other animals also possess unique sixth senses, as outlined below.
Dogs
Dogs exhibit remarkable abilities in sensing human emotions and providing comfort. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, dogs possess intuitive capabilities to perceive human moods and emotions, likely through sensing changes in hormone levels or interpreting alterations in facial expressions, vocal tone, body language, and scent. Many dogs can also detect variations in human health conditions, such as low blood sugar levels, and anticipate impending storms. Whether attributed to their heightened hearing and olfactory senses or an extraordinary sixth sense, dogs possess an exceptional ability to connect with their human companions.

When sharks hunt for prey, they rely on their sixth sense to detect electrical pulses in the ocean. Through an organ known as the Ampullae of Lorenzini, which are jelly-filled pockets located in a shark’s head, they can navigate water using electroreception, as stated by the Catalina Island Marine Institute. Sharks typically have around 1,500 ampullae on their heads, and experts believe they are sensitive enough to detect electric fields as weak as one billionth of a volt per meter, making them one of the most sensitive creatures in the animal kingdom.
Bats are skilled navigators, especially in darkness. Recent research published in 2021 reveals that a bat’s sixth sense is located in the cornea of its eyes. Bats can navigate in the dark due to a magnetic sense, possibly involving magnetoreceptive proteins or iron-based particles.
Who needs a weather forecast when elephants are as accurate at predicting storms? According to a 2014 study, elephants can sense approaching storms up to 150 miles away, sometimes even several days in advance. Researchers suggest that elephants may detect incoming storms through low-frequency sounds generated by the storms, allowing them to prepare for the weather.
Geckos, particularly the tokay gecko, can sense ground vibrations through their inner ear. A study in June 2025 discovered that the fluid-filled pouch inside a gecko’s skull, which aids in balance, also helps detect underground tremors, as reported by Earth.com.
Loggerhead sea turtles have internal magnetic maps and the ability to learn new locations. A study published in February 2025 found that these turtles can recognize and remember magnetic signatures, enabling them to migrate with precision using Earth’s magnetic field. This ability to distinguish magnetic fields of different geographic areas helps various animals, including sea turtles, navigate long distances to specific locations.
In multiple new locations, we have discovered how maps can be constructed and altered. It is fascinating how sea turtles possess a vast amount of imperceptible information that they utilize to navigate in ways that are beyond our comprehension.

His accuracy was so remarkable that the nursing home would notify the families of patients to visit if Oscar began spending time in their rooms.
Margie Scherk, DVM, the president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and a veterinarian, shared with CBS News, “I believe he may be detecting some chemical released just before death. Cats can detect a variety of scents that are imperceptible to us. Additionally, cats can certainly recognize illness.”
While we may not fully comprehend how these animals develop their extraordinary sixth sense, one thing is certain: animals possess unique abilities that we are only beginning to grasp.
