Designing your apartment to reflect your personal style while keeping your security deposit intact can be a challenge. Fortunately, Drew and Jonathan Scott, the stars of Property Brothers, have shared their top decor tips for renters to help you achieve your dream home without the need for major renovations or causing damage.

In a video featured on the brothers’ YouTube channel, HGTV personalities Drew and Jonathan reveal their favorite strategies for transforming living spaces. “Given today’s housing market, many people are opting to rent,” Jonathan points out. “There are plenty of design tricks that won’t upset your landlord.”

Drew emphasizes the versatility of peel-and-stick wallpaper as a temporary way to elevate your space. “Wallpaper can make a big impact and enhance the overall look of a room,” he explains. “You can use it to define a space, create depth, or even add interest to a ceiling.”

Jonathan recommends updating window treatments to add color and personality to a room. “Installing beautiful curtains is an easy way to infuse warmth and character,” he suggests. “There are endless options available for window coverings to suit your style preferences.”

When deciding between curtains, blinds, or shades, consider the functionality you need. Whether you want blackout curtains for better sleep or sheer options for a light-filled space, choose accordingly.

For more illumination, Drew proposes incorporating floor or table lamps to brighten up your living area. He notes that landlords often permit tenants to switch out sconces or overhead lighting fixtures to customize the space. “Ensure that any changes you make are reversible so you can take them with you when you move,” Drew advises.

While painting rental walls can be a touchy subject, Jonathan mentions instances where tenants were allowed to paint their homes without having to revert it back to its original state upon moving out, as long as the job was well-done or a modern color was chosen. If you have a specific paint color in mind that aligns with your vision, it’s worth discussing with your landlord for approval.
