While the original flavor remains a favorite (with a top spot in our official ranking), the influx of new flavors hitting the shelves has been impressive. Notably, options like Chocolate Covered Pretzel and Mint Chip have made a mark.
In the latest release, the renowned cookie brand collaborated with singer, actress, and entrepreneur Selena Gomez to introduce a limited-edition flavor. Selena brings a twist (quite literally) with a cookie inspired by horchata, the refreshing Mexican beverage made with rice, cinnamon, and sweetened condensed milk. Naturally, I wasted no time in grabbing a gleaming burgundy pack from the store. The outcome was quite predictable…
Selena Gomez Oreo Cookies: What You Need to Know
Horchata holds a special place as one of Selena’s favorite beverages. Having enjoyed it frequently in her childhood, it seemed fitting to blend those “comforting, nostalgic” flavors into a cookie, as she explains. The two chocolate-cinnamon cookies sandwich not one but TWO different creme flavors: a chocolate and cinnamon creme atop a sweetened condensed milk creme with hints of cinnamon sugar specks.
The cookies don an assortment of music- and Selena-inspired designs like headphones and music notes. One features “selenators” (her fans), while a QR code on the packaging unlocks exclusive content along with a new song coinciding with the launch. Additionally, Selena’s signature can be found on a cookie in approximately every third pack—a first for Oreo to imprint an autograph on a cookie.
As a staunch advocate for mental health, Selena has the support of Oreo, which made a contribution to the Rare Impact Fund—founded by Selena in 2020—with a mission to enhance mental health resources for youth worldwide.
The flavor was initially offered for presale in the U.S. on June 2 and hit shelves on June 9. Priced at around $5 for a 10-ounce pack, it is also available in Australia and New Zealand starting June 17.
Selena Gomez Oreo Cookies Review
Being a cinnamon enthusiast, I was excited as soon as I caught a whiff of the familiar sweet, spicy, warming scent upon opening the Oreo pack. The cookies are not just flavorful but also visually appealing with their diverse designs and the exquisite swirl of the two creme flavors.
Opening up a cookie to taste the cremes individually, the chocolate creme offers a subtle chocolatey note, whereas the cinnamon creme is robust and bold (it tends to dominate when both cremes are consumed together). Yet, with a bite of the chocolate cinnamon cookie, I instantly recognized the dark chocolate’s slightly bitter essence that I adore in the classic cookie. The blend of all three components is harmonious and delightful
I savored the lingering taste of cinnamon on my tongue. Our Director of Groceries and Shopping, Mara, also found the creme flavor impressive. “The filling truly stands out. It’s creamy, cinnamon-infused, reminiscent of the inside of a freshly baked cinnamon roll with a generous layer of icing,” she praises. I have to agree with Selena — the horchata influence is evident. I would even advocate for making this a permanent flavor.
