Discover Martha’s Amazing Topiary Adventure!

Martha visited Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland, during her recent trip to the state. The gardens are famous for their over 100 larger-than-life topiary creations and cover 22 acres around a historic manor house. Harvey S. Ladew, a topiary lover, designed and established the gardens. These were inspired by the 18th-century historic house where Ladew’s English antiques and equestrian art collection are displayed. The estate, built over three centuries, serves as a tribute to Ladew’s legacy.

Martha praises the gardens in a blog post, noting Ladew’s personal involvement in planning and landscaping. She mentions Ladew’s English hunt-inspired topiaries, such as a scene depicting hounds chasing a fox, complete with riders on horses.

The property’s Garden of Eden steps bear Ladew’s favorite Chinese proverb, stating, “If you want to be happy all your life, plant a garden,” a sentiment shared by Martha. During her visit, Martha also attended the Garden Festival, where she explored various garden items like fountains, urns, furniture, and unique plants for sale. The proceeds help maintain and protect the gardens.

Martha highly recommends visiting Ladew Topiary Gardens to admire the beautifully manicured topiaries, take a nature walk, and explore the native butterfly house.
